Could Portsmouth sign ex-Rotherham United midfielder from Blackburn Rovers?

Richard smallwood is expected to leave blackburn rovers this summer.

The midfielder’s contract at Ewood Park expires at the end of next month and he is set to become a free agent.

Smallwood, who is 29 years old, could become a target for League One side Portsmouth. Their boss Kenny Jackett managed him at Rotherham United a few years ago.

Pompey will be in the hunt for some reinforcements to their squad this summer and Smallwood could be a shrewd acquisition for them. He has bags of experience in the third tier and would add more depth to their midfield options.

Smallwood started his career at Middlesbrough and rose up through their youth ranks before making 72 appearances for their first-team. He left the Riverside Stadium on loan in 2014 to Rotherham United and helped the Yorkshire side gain promotion to the Championship.

The Millers signed him permanently that summer and he stayed at the New York Stadium until June 2017 after Blackburn signed him after he spent time on loan at Scunthorpe United.

Smallwood helped the Lancashire side win promotion from League One in his first campaign at the club, getting promoted for the second time in his career in the process.

The midfielder has since fallen down the pecking order at Ewood Park in the Championship and will move on this summer.

He could be ideal for Portsmouth, who are aiming for promotion to the second tier. Smallwood has ‘been there, done that’ twice now and could potentially reunite with Jackett at Fratton Park.
